Net neutrality is when content can’t become favored. Big corporations with the power to control content want the age of net neutrality to come to an end. Verizon and Google are preparing to work together to get information out faster, with a bigger price. Those for net neutrality hope that Google and Verizon will be stopped by the Federal Communications Commission. Since net neutrality was decided by the Comcast decision in April to not be within the hands of the FCC, FCC can’t do anything.
Net neutrality and working out a compromise
Net neutrality has been a topic being discussed by Internet stakeholders and FCC officials. Those involved in the category internet stakeholders are Verizon, AT and T, cable companies, the Open Internet Coalition and Google. During these conversations, FCC’s authority to take legal action on Internet regulation is what is being talking about, reports the New York Times. Cable and telephone companies want to place a premium on higher bandwidth. No regulation on wireless broadband is what wireless companies would like. Content providers want no favoritism on the Internet. The FCC wants a level playing field, but because of the FCC Comcast decision, it can’t impose one as long as its authority is in legal doubt.
Change expected with the rebellion from Google and Verizon
Net neutrality is the big topic for the FCC and Internet stakeholders, although Google and Verizon on the side have been working on a deal. Bloomberg explains that both Google and Verizon have always been against net neutrality. Verizon wants to be able to charge more for their services. Google has wanted regulations to prevent companies like Verizon from offering content from partners that pay for higher speed. Now, Google may have figured that the era of net neutrality is already over. Making a deal with Verizon could give Google the advantage when the corporate feeding craze begins.
A corporate takeover within the near future
The Google/Verizon deal could very well change the market in a way that consumers no longer have a say in which companies do well. Conserve the Internet shows how Google could make commercial deals with companies. The best browser to use would be Chrome. Google Buzz would work better than Twitter. Bandwidth from YouTube would be more than other websites. WordPress wouldn’t do as well as Blogger from Google. Skype would die out with Google’s GChat on top, and also the list continues on and on.
The Google Verizon deal makes for winners and losers
The Wall Street Journal reports that the Google/Verizon deal will make it so numerous lose when on the Internet to winners doing better than them. Content will be put into different streams of internet. There can be higher charges for faster, prioritized content. The Internet service providers will wrest control of the web from the FCC. Big media corporations will squeeze out the competition that keeps them honest. Surfing the Internet will become like trying to discover something that is not total garbage to watch on cable television. The only reason this hasn’t happened yet is because of the courts and also the FCC.
